Prerequisite:
PSY 1101/1102
Goals of the
Course: In this course
we will evaluate conceptions of abnormal behaviour
including the definitions and classifications of abnormal behavior. You will be able to distinguish between
various conceptions of normality and defend one as being most appropriate. We will examine several models used to
explain maladaptive behaviours. You will be able to describe several anxiety
related disorders and explain several theories as to their cause and cure. You will be able to describe dissociative and
somatoform disorders and explain their cause and cure. Likewise you will be able to describe a host
of symptoms defining the affective disorders as well as schizophrenia and
explain several theories that explain the development of these behaviours. For schizophrenia, in particular, you will be able to identify medical
treatments and describe their effects on the behaviours
involved. In addition to discussing the
symptoms and causes of these behaviours we will
consider some common forms of therapeutic intervention. You will be able to evaluate these
interventions based on both a theoretical and empirical standpoint.
Classes and
Assignments: This seminar
format class will be a combination of lecture and discussion format. Often the lectures will be in the form of
short videos which you will consume at your leisure. Most weeks we will meet online the Tuesday
and introduce the topic and answer any questions you have based on your
readings. Some weeks it may make more
sense to meet on the Thursday and I will let you know each week when we will
meet. I hope you will think critically about the
topics we cover and that you will feel free to raise questions and comment on
what you study. You will be required to
prepare and submit a short weekly assignment
based on the readings for the week. The
details of this weekly assignment are outlined below. You will also be preparing a research project
in the form of a written paper. You
should discuss potential topics with me as early in the term as possible so as
to allow time to do a thorough job. I
hope that you all can easily find of a topic of interest to you but if you
cannot please see me and we can discuss possible topics for you. In addition to submitting a research paper,
you will be presenting the product of your research to the class towards the
end of the term. You will have a midterm
exam as well as a final exam. You are
expected to attend all lectures and complete all assignments in a timely
fashion. Should there be a problem with
those expectations please see me to arrange an alternative way to satisfy your
obligations.

your time as each point should only be a sentence or two. It can even be handwritten but I suggest
you make a copy for yourself as not all of these assignments may be
returned. PLEASE SUBMIT THESE BEFORE WE
DISCUSS THE TOPIC IN CLASS.
